AI-Assisted Slingerland Lesson Planning: Sustaining Slingerland Skills Workshop

This four-session workshop guides educators through using Claude AI to create fully integrated Auditory Approach and Visual Approach lesson plans tailored to individual students, small groups, and whole classrooms. 

The Slingerland Instructor will guide participants through setting up Claude Project features, uploading provided technical specification documents, and working through a guided sequence of prompts to build complete, personalized lesson materials. By the end of the workshop, participants will use Claude to create student/class profiles that drive highly individualized lesson plans, and will know how to adjust Claude's outputs to fit their own lesson plan formatting preferences.

All activities are designed to protect student privacy best practices and require enabling Claude AI paid subscription features.

Participants will use Claude to:

• Create reading passages written at the student's skill level

• Build all four steps of reading from the book

• Generate prep-for-reading materials including definitions, clues, and word and phrase lists

• Create sentences and phrases for auditory presentation

• Build C:Spelling sequences

• Generate encoding activities

• Produce pre-encoding alphabet cards (oral and written)

• Develop complete learning-to-write sequences

• Create decoding lists to practice the auditory skill on the visual side of the lesson

Who is this for?

Slingerland classroom teachers and tutors who want a way to organize and quickly build Slingerland lesson plans and custom passages for the Visual Approach. Participants must be familiar with the Slingerland® Approach to make use of the training in this workshop. This workshop does not include instruction on implementation of the Slingerland® Approach itself.

Participant Requirements:

1. Completed at least Introductory Comprehensive Class

2. Gmail or Google Workspace account (free from Google)

3. Claude Pro account ($20/mo., available at claude.ai)

Session Outline:

• Session 1: Onboarding (Claude setup, Google Drive connection, project file uploads) and demonstrations for student profiles and lesson planning.

• Session 2: Using Claude to create student profiles and build complete Visual lesson plans

• Session 3: Using Claude to create student profiles and build complete Auditory lesson plans

• Session 4: Adjusting Claude for individual teaching preferences; Troubleshooting and peer editing a shared library of reading passages.

Disclaimer: 

AI is a tool that can assist skilled Slingerland teachers, but it cannot replace the expertise needed to finalize structuring a Slingerland reading passage or polishing an auditory lesson plan. Claude and other AI tools require time to think and produce reading passages and lesson plans. While the reading side of the lesson plan saves time and allows tailored passage creation, the auditory side of the lesson takes about as much time to plan as by hand. Claude can produce reasonably strong lesson plans and reading passages; however, it can make errors and must be checked.
