Slingerland Literacy Institute is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization governed by a Board of Directors who serve on a volunteer basis.

Joan Beauregard

Board President

Joan Beauregard has served in the field of education for over 44 years. Retiring as Head of Hamlin Robinson School (HRS) in 2018, Joan joined Educators Collaborative as a partner and continued to serve HRS as Strategic Initiatives consultant. For the past 26 years Joan has been the Head or Interim Head of five schools including St. Thomas School (WA), Giddens School (WA), The Little School (WA), The Oaks School (CA) and Hamlin Robinson School (WA). She has been active in the Northwest Association of Independent Schools (NWAIS), serving as a trustee for over 15 years and holding many leadership positions. She was also president of the WA Federation of Independent Schools. Joan is a member of the Country Day School Headmaster’s Association and also Head Mistresses of the East. She has served on the boards of many independent schools and other organizations and also on over a dozen accreditation teams. She is a founding faculty member of Pathways to Leadership, a program for aspiring woman leaders. Joan holds a B.A. in English and Education from Annhurst College, a M.A.T. in Early Childhood and Elementary Education from Federal City College and her WA Administrative Credentials from Seattle Pacific University.

Board Vice President / Treasurer

Jen is the Director of Advancement for Hamlin Robinson School, having previously served as the Director of Community Services for the school's HRS Learning Center. Her other roles have included Director of Fund Development at Densho (WA); Librarian at St. Thomas School (WA), Research Project Director at both ARBOR, Inc. (PA) and DRI (CA), Associate Research Project Director at Foote, Cone & Belding Advertising (Los Angeles), and Research Analyst at Bozell, Inc. Advertising (Los Angeles). Jen holds a Master’s in Library & Information Science from the University of Washington (ischool Scholarship Award) as well as a Bachelor’s in Journalism from Texas Christian University (Magna cum Laude).

Toni Altug

Toni Altug has been an educator in both the United States and Turkey since 1985, beginning her professional career as a special education teacher in the public school system. In 1992, she began working at Hamlin Robinson School and was trained in the Slingerland® Approach by then Head Bev Wolf and the supportive staff at HRS. Toni continues to use the Approach for international school classrooms, special education programs, tutoring sessions with youth and adults, and at centers as a volunteer. In addition to being a classroom teacher, Toni has been the Special Educational Needs Coordinator for the British International School of Istanbul, a staff teacher for the Slingerland® Literacy Institute, Head of Preschool English for TEK Schools (Istanbul), a consultant for schools in Istanbul, and a member of the WABIDA Board.

Mark Brooks

Board Member


Mark Brooks is currently the Head of School at Madison Country Day school (MCDS). Prior to leading MCDS, Mark served as Head of The Center for Early Education and Pilgrim School, both in Los Angeles. He holds an A.B. in International Relations from the University of Southern California, and a Juris Doctorate from Loyola Law School. He is also a graduate of the Klingenstein Fellowship program at Columbia Teachers College. Mark served as board president of the California Association of Independent Schools (CAIS) and as a trustee of the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS). He served as the secretary of the Enrollment Management Association and on the board of The Principals' Center at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Mark currently serves on the ISACS Accreditation Review Committee, is a trustee of the Ahmanson Foundation, and a member of the Head’s Collegiate Forum.

Andrea Archer

Board Member

Andrea has spent the last 15 years imbedded in learning about and advocating for families with Dyslexia and other language learning challenges after working over 25 years in management positions in the public and private sectors.

Andrea and her husband are the parents of a former Hamlin Robinson School (HRS) student. Andrea is a previous HRS trustee, where she actively participated on various committees, including Development, Strategic Planning, Governance, and the Capital Campaign Cabinet.

She has served two terms as a Director on the Washington State Branch of the International Dyslexia Association (WABIDA), a previous board member of the Slingerland Learning Institute in 2019 and was a member of the Board of the WA State Dyslexia Council. She has been active attending NWAIS, IDA and other educational institutions to further her abilities to advocate for students with language-learning needs, and welcomes the opportunity to continue that journey now, rejoining us on SLI's Board.
