COPYING AND DICTATION
THE SLINGERLAND ROUTE TO INDEPENDENT WRITTEN EXPRESSION: Skills to Functional Use
Critical components of written expression include letter formation, spelling, vocabulary, syntax, grammar, sentence structure, punctuation, capitalization, background knowledge, and organization. All must be explicitly taught to most students—especially beginning and struggling learners. Teaching the skills—the pieces—is important; equally crucial to creating independent writers is instruction that integrates and teaches functional use of skills at higher and higher levels.

Sustaining Slingerland Skills followup classes are intended for teachers who have completed at least the Introductory Comprehensive class. Depending on the followup topic, classes may be appropriate for those who have taken a Slingerland short class on a related topic. Each followup class will focus on a particular aspect of the Slingerland Approach, the Slingerland lesson plan, structured literacy, and/or the science of reading. Followup classes may include lecture, video clips, discussion, and question-and-answer.
Classes are held virtually to offer this opportunity to the widest audience possible.
Each of these three-hour followup classes is approved by IMSLEC for three hours of CEU credit
for those seeking recertification as a Certified Slingerland Teacher (CST) or Certified Slingerland Instructor of Teachers (CSIT).
