This class covers the theory of Science of Reading/structured literacy and the practical approach of multisensory/multimodal instruction developed by Beth H. Slingerland.
The Slingerland® Approach Multisensory Structured Language Comprehensive Classes are based on an adaptation by Beth H. Slingerland of the multisensory approach of Dr. Samuel T. Orton and Anna Gillingham. The techniques she developed are based on sound neurological principles of learning and give children the necessary tools to be successful readers, writers, and spellers.
The class includes a practicum with students, demonstrations, and observations. This intensive class of study includes instructional techniques in handwriting, written language, decoding, and reading comprehension.
Instructor: Stephanie Hofeling
Stephanie Hofeling has been a teacher for 48 years. She has taught first, fifth, and sixth grades, has been a Teacher in Gifted Classrooms, a Reading Specialist, an Instructional Coach, and a Literacy Coach in public elementary schools. Because of her work, Stephanie was a Recipient of the Excel Outstanding Educator Award from the Granite Education Foundation and a Nominee for Granite School District Teacher of the Year. She has B.S. and M.A.Ed. degrees in Elementary Education, along with a Reading Endorsement Levels I & II and an endorsement in Gifted & Talented. Since 1983, Stephanie has trained teachers across the country for the Slingerland Literacy Institute. She is also a private tutor using the Slingerland Approach.
CLASS DETAILS
Introductory Level Class: This class is the core of the Slingerland training program. Class content includes:
· Instruction in the introductory steps of handwriting, written language, decoding and reading comprehension
· Practice with multi-sensory teaching principles through daily work with children.
· The study of phonic rules and their application to encoding and decoding
· The neurology of language as a means of developing oral language skills
· The history, philosophy and current research in the field of dyslexia, structured literacy, and science of reading
· The relationship of curriculum and classroom organization to the language arts program
Introductory Class includes texts and teaching tools with a retail value of $215 ($235 with Shipping & Handling).

Graduate Level Extension Credit Available
These classes are 133 classroom hours each and are approved for six graduate level extension credits through the University of San Diego. The credits are not part of a degree program and are at the option of the teacher/participant.
