PREPARATION FORREADING AND STRUCTURED READING: January 20, 2024
Reading Fluency: Related to Prosody ➔ Much More than Speed/What is the Role of Syntactic Awareness?
Fluent reading is a combination of accuracy, prosody, and automaticity; together, they promote reading comprehension. Automatic word recognition, appropriate pacing, intonation, and parsing of words into meaningful phrases all contribute to fluency during oral reading. The ability to chunk words into meaningful phrases is related to syntactic awareness. Excessive focus on rate can interfere with, rather than augment, comprehension. Fluency, including prosody, is a factor in both oral and silent reading that can limit or support comprehension. The presentation includes video clips of group instruction demonstrating how to teach students syntactic awareness as a foundation for parsing sentences into meaningful phrases when reading connected text. Other topics of discussion requested by participants at the 10.20.2023 follow up meeting are listed:
· Rationale For Choice of Phrases
· Difference between Purpose-Goals and Clues for Prep for Reading and for Structured Reading
· Words—Phrases—Clauses as Syntactical Units that Answer “Parts-Of-Speech” Questions
· Intellectualization of Phrase Concept
· Practice Structuring Passages as both Teacher and Student
Sustaining Slingerland Skills followup classes are intended for teachers who have completed at least the Introductory Comprehensive class. Each followup class will focus on a particular aspect of the Slingerland Approach, the Slingerland lesson plan, structured literacy, and/or the science of reading. Followup classes may include lecture, video clips, discussion, and question-and-answer.
Classes are held virtually to offer this opportunity to the widest audience possible.
Each of these three-hour followup classes is approved by IMSLEC for three hours of CEU credit
for those seeking recertification as a Certified Slingerland Teacher (CST) or Certified Slingerland Instructor of Teachers (CSIT).
