This Slingerland® short class is designed for any educator responsible for the initial teaching of penmanship skills to younger children (manuscript) or to older students who have not established penmanship proficiency in at least one script (manuscript or cursive). While each person ultimately develops individual styles of handwriting, this course will show teachers how to make legible writing possible for all students. Class participants will actively apply the Slingerland multisensory techniques throughout the class in guided practice sessions.
In this 12.5 hour Slingerland Short Class, participants will learn the Slingerland instructional techniques for teaching manuscript and cursive handwriting.
- Topics include:
- The developmental stages of handwriting
- The ability to identify breakdowns in the learning process and develop prescriptive lesson plans
- Strategies for multisensory (multimodal) instruction teaching new letter forms and reviewing those previously taught
- Strategies for teaching students to copy accurately from far point and near point
- Providing your students with the tools for automatic letter recall
- The beginning steps for putting handwriting to functional use

Graduate Level Extension Credit Available
This workshop is approved for 1 graduate level extension credit through University of San Diego. The credit is not part of a degree program. Additional fee is required for the credit. Registration for extension credit must happen ON or BEFORE the first day of the workshop. Registration details will be sent to participants before the start of class.

Slingerland® Short Classes focus on specific components of the comprehensive training. They provide practical tools for teachers, tutors, parents, and paraprofessionals working with children who need a multisensory approach to learning. Short classes do not include practicum.
