Teacher Training
A Brief Introduction for Families of Slingerland Students
Since 1977, Slingerland® Literacy Institute has trained educators in the Slingerland® Approach, the only whole-classroom adaptation of the Orton-Gillingham 1-on-1 Approach approved by Anna Gillingham.
The Slingerland Approach equips teachers with the tools needed to instruct students in all areas of language arts, whether reading, writing, spelling or speaking, and transfer those tools to use beyond the language arts classroom.

Comprehensive Classes
One Classroom: Two Classes
The core of Slingerland training is the month-long Comprehensive class. During a comprehensive class, teachers learn how to implement the Slingerland Approach by observing expert teachers and tutoring students in a Slingerland Summer School.
Students benefit by:
-
being taught by an expert Instructor in a whole-class setting
-
being tutored by a teacher one-on-one or in small groups
Teachers benefit by:
-
watching an expert Instructor implement in the Approach in a whole classroom
-
tutoring students under the Instructor’s supervision
Instructors provide both students and teachers prompt feedback and support to succeed.

Short Classes
Targeted Training in the Approach
Short classes provide high-quality teacher training online or in-person. Each class focuses on one element of the Slingerland Approach. This allows class participants to train in the area of instruction that best meets their needs.

Teachers, tutors, and even parents who want to help their children often take short classes.

Certification
A Sign of Excellence
Educators who complete the full Slingerland training course are eligible to be certified by the Institute.
Earning Slingerland Certification typically takes two years and requires repeated demonstration of skill and alignment to the Slingerland Approach.
Certification is available at two levels:
-
Certified Slingerland Teachers (CSTs) have completed the full course of classes on how to implement the Slingerland Approach as classroom teachers and tutors.
-
Certified Slingerland Instructor of Teachers (CSITs) begin as CSTs who pursue additional training focused on training educators how to use the Slingerland Approach.
Any teacher or tutor who has completed at least one Comprehensive class may request to be added to our list of Slingerland tutors. Those certified at the CST or CSIT level are identified with a badge reflecting that accomplishment.
